Minwax Refinishing Project

I'm not a professional woodworker. I've done some small refinishing projects in the past that I was happy with. I find that if you follow the directions on the labels, you usually get the results you are looking for. And I have used many Minwax products and been very please with the result. I am a bit disappointed with the outcome of this project because the end result does not remotely match the image on the label. I did deviate from the explicit directions a little. Maybe someone out there can tell me what I should have done differently to get the result that I wanted.

Soils and Mulches

It's the care and hard work you are willing to put into a gardening or landscaping project that lead to success.  But just as important are rich soil and high-quality mulch.  Whether you are working for pleasure or profit, you can find soils and mulches you need to be successful at Quality Hardware and Lumber.

Tapping Trees for Maple Sugaring

Once the daytime temperatures are above freezing and while the nighttime temperatures are still below freezing, I tap the one tree in my front yard. Each year I get about a gallon of syrup, which is plenty for my own use.

Shellac is still made from the secretion of the Lac bug. It is available in many shades from clear or “blonde” to dark brown, although the most common colors are clear, amber, and orange. Synthetic shellac is now commercially available. It is used to create a high gloss finish. Like lacquer, it doesn’t soak in to a porous surface. It is not as durable as lacquer, or polyurethane. It isn’t water proof, and it can be damaged by heat. But, although it is subject to water and heat damage, it is easy to repair. It can be stripped by using denatured alcohol, and then recoated. It is non-toxic, so it can be used for children’s toys. It is also use in the pharmaceutical industry to coat tablets....
