Like the finest whiskeys, or most indulgent chocolates, Farrow & Ball paints and wallpapers are handcrafted in small batches, making each gallon, or roll, a unique creation. When purchasing Farrow & Ball, you can rest assured that not only are you getting the best there is, but that your purchase has been manufactured with safe, sustainable raw materials by a workforce supported with dignity and respect.
Product
At Farrow & Ball they consider every ingredient they use for both how it improves the performance of their paint and wallpapers, and how sustainable the use of that ingredient is. Their commitment to producing the finest products is only conditional on maintaining a low environmental impact and a positive, supportive work environment. In the 2010s, Farrow & Ball led the industry in converting to using 100% water-based solvents. All of their paints are low VOC, and some are categorized as Trace VOC, which is the lowest rating the UK government recognizes. And 95% of their product line is vegan friendly. Only two finishes, Casein Distemper and Soft Distemper, are not. The paper used in their wallpapers is sourced from manufacturers that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council for responsible forest management. They use their own paint on their wallpapers, and no PVC or plastic coatings are used.
Process
To use safe, sustainable ingredients is not enough for Farrow & Ball. The process is important, too. Farrow & Ball's small-batch manufacturing process uses only renewable energy and produces no waste to landfill, recycling 100% of their liquid waste. They have only electric forklifts in their factory, and use electric shutters on their windows to reduce heat loss in the rainy British climate.
People
Being passionate about what they do includes supporting their people. Farrow & Ball maintains an Employee Assistance Programme, providing parental leave, free counseling and therapist-led workshops, talks and training, and referrals for physical and mental health, family, and legal advice. At Farrow & Ball, there is no gender pay gap, and in the UK they pay above the minimum wage, with annual pay review for all their employees.
